Topic: The Prodigal Son. (Youth Lesson 15).

Text: Luke 15:11-24

Memory Verse: Luke 15:10. “There is Joy in the presence of God over one sinner that repenteth”.

The Story of the Prodigal Son began in Luke 15:11 with the statement: “There was a certain man who had two sons”. The word “certain” shows that this is a true-life story, not fiction, not an imaginary story.

It is a true life story where the younger of two brothers asked his father for his share of inheritance from his father’s wealth. The younger or rebellious son collected his father’s wealth to go and enjoy life in another country. He went where no family member could see, control or advise him.

In this other country, he used up all the money and was soon begging for a living to the point of eating with Pigs. He came to his Senses and decided to return to his Father and beg for forgiveness. His Father was happy to receive him, forgave him and organized a welcome party for his repentant son.

Lessons to Learn from the Above Story.

1). The younger son rebelled against his Father’s authority.

He felt living with his Dad was restricting him from enjoying himself. Sometimes you feel the same way as a child or youth. You feel Daddy and Mummy are given you too many rules like you must be at home at a certain time of the evening. You must let at least one member of the family know where you are at any point in time.

2). Things did not work out as Planned.

Luke 15:13-14. ““Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living.  After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need”.

The younger son lived a rough-life in the New country. He obviously went drinking, partying and womanizing. He soon ran out of money. His lack of money was made worse by an unexpected famine.

Plan for both the expected and unexpected. Plan for both the good and bad days. Because he did not plan and did notexpect any famine, he soon found himself eating with Pigs, with Nobody willing to lend him money. At this point he practically lived like a Beggar.

3). The Prodigal Son Returned to His Senses.

Luke 15:17. “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!”

He told himself the bitter truth that he had made a Mistake. He did not Allow pride to blind him to the bitter truth of his Mistake.

No Pastor preached to him to change his ways. The Prodigal Son preached to himself and admitted his Mistake.

4).  Quality Decision.

Luke 15:18. I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.”

The prodigal son took a quality decision to return to his Father and Apologize.

The Lesson here is that no matter how far you’ve gone on a Wrong Road, it’s never too late to turn back.

5) His Father had Mercy (Compassion) on Him  and Forgave Him.

Luke 15: 20-24.But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him” Luke 15:20.

When the Prodigal Son returned, he humbled himself to beg his Father’s forgiveness. His Father had Mercy on him, forgave him and organized a welcome-party for his prodigal son.

The Arms of God are open to receive you when you truly make up your mind to give up your Sinful ways.  That’s why Jesus Said in  John 6:37:

“ . . . and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out”.

God the father said: “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool”; Isiah 1:18.

Don’t wait until it is too late before you ask God for Mercy and Cleansing by the Blood of Jesus. The Blood of Jesus is the only detergent that wash away our sins.

“Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”  Hebrew 3:15.

Let us PRAY.

Heavenly Father, I’ve sinned against you in thoughts, words and actions.(Mention as many sins as you remember). I am Sorry. Forgive Me my Sins and the Error of My Ways. Wash away my sins with the blood of Jesus. I’ve decide to change my ways for good. Give me the power to please you now and always, until I see your face in Heaven; in Jesus Name I pray.Amen.

  1. Why did the Prodigal Son ask for a Portion of his Father’s wealth?
  2. Why did things work out as planned  for the prodigal son in the strange country?
  3. If you’ve gone too f-a-r in a wrong direction, what’s the best thing you could do?
  4. Quote the Memory Verse for this Lesson.
  5. Quote Hebrew 3:15.
