Introduction: Thoughts give rise to  Words. Matthew 12:34. Words give rise to  Actions’. Actions give rise to  Habits. Habits give rise to  Character. Character gives rise to  Destiny.

As a Man Thinketh in his Heart, so is He”. Proverbs 23:7. Meaning Your Life Gravitates consciously or unconsciously towards the direction of your thoughts; towards what you spend most of your time thinking about.

A habit is conscious or semiconscious repetitive behavior.. Addictions is an  extreme-attraction to a particular repeated behavior. Habits can be good or bad. In this Study, we want to focus on Overcoming Bad Habits and Negative Addictions from a Biblical Perspective.

D). How To Overcome Bad and Negative Addictive Habits.

"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws”. Ezekiel 36:26-27.

"For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened” Matthew 7:8.

1) Pray For Divine Help.

Ask God to remind you when you are getting back into Old Negative Habits.

"I will guide you with my eye and teach you the Way you should Go”. Psalm 32:8.

2) Study God’s Word.

  • Your word I have treasured and stored in my heart, That I may not sin against You”   Psalm 119:11. (Amplified Version).

3) Be Determined To Break Free.

  • I can do All Things through Christ who Strengthens Me”. Phillipians 4:13.
  • Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the Devil and He Shall Flee From You”. James 4:7.
  • Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us”. Hebrews 12:1. (English Standard Version).

4) Ask For The Prayerful Support of Your Loved Ones To Guard Against Falling Back to Bad Habits.

  • Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor:
If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up”.
    Ecclesiastes 4:9-10(NIV).
  • But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called "Today," so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness.”  Hebrews 3:13. (NIV).
  • Let The Righteous smite me, it shall be a KINDNESS. Let him reprove me, it shall be an excellent oil which shall not break my Head”. Psalm 141:5.

5)Make it Difficult For Yourself to Fall Back into Old Pattern of Behaviour.

Burn The Bridge Behind You, so as to Make it Difficult For You to Fall Back into Old Habits.

For Example;

  • Burn Pornographic Magazines or Stop Watching TV Channels that Promote Pornography,
  • Throw Away The Ash Trays, Change Your Route  in order to Avoid Stores where You Stop To Buy Cigarettes or Hard Substances or Alcohol,
  • Clear Your House of Alcoholic Drinks,

6) Replace Bad Habits With Good Ones.

A Proverb says Nature Abhors a Vacum. Meaning, Nature hates an Empty Space. Therefore You Need To Replace Bad Habits with Good Ones.

  • Engage in a Useful Hobby or  Do some Exercises instead of watching Ponographic TV Channels or  Reading Ponographic Magazines,
  • Walk Away From Stressful Situations that make You Angry,
  • Sing a Song that You Like when You feel Downcast or Impatient,
  • Drink Water instead of Alcohol bearing in Mind That Water Detoxifies your body properly more than Any other Liquid,

  •  Memorize and Quote Scriptures Aloud,
  •  IF you are eating too much of a particular food substance like Sugar which could cause Diabetes; eat it in Moderation or Replace The Sugar with something less-sweet, etc.

   7)Endure WithDrawal Symptoms.

Giving Up Bad Habits especially when it has degenerated to an Addiction Level, could result in Uncomfortable Psychological, Emotionalor even Physical Symptoms, a.k.a Withdrawal Syndrome.

The Way To Handle Withdrawal Symptoms is SelfControl. That Means, You Giveup Something because you want to get something Better. And Remember, that your withdrawal symptoms is just for a Season-It wont last throughout your Lifetime. So, Hang in There and Ignore the Withdrawal Symptoms.

      8). Do Not GiveUp.

Do Not Give Up on Yourself If You happen to Fail.

“ For a Righteous man falleth Seven Times and Riseth Up Again” Proverbs 24:16

  • Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up”. Galatians 6:9 (NIV).
